Teacher Lesson Plans - Shark Infested Water
Introduction (5 minutes)
Explain the scenario that there is a hot air balloon with 6 members inside. In our class we will form groups with 6 members to act out what will happen.
Preparation (5 minutes)
Ask the students to choose a character each from the below list;
- A Doctor
- A deaf man
- A 20 year old girl
- A Priest
- A terminally ill patient with just 6 months left
- A middle school student
Task 1 (15 minutes)
Give the students the following information, and ask them to decide an order in which people should jump, but don’t do it yet. This should be a group decision, not an argument.
- The doctor is doing research into a cure for cancer
- The deaf man has 5 children
- The girl is pregnant
- The priest has said his prayers and is willing to jump over
- The terminally ill patient is extremely rich and has no family
- The middle school student tried to push the girl over but failed
Task 2 (30 minutes)
Give them the new information below and tell them to get rid of one person every 5 minutes. A good way to do this is to take a group vote on the first person, and after that to allow the deceased members to be the jury by vote.
- The doctor lied to try and save himself and has no family at all
- The deaf man is 90 years old
- The pregnant girl wants to kill herself
- The priest is 85 and blind
- The terminally ill person can now live for another 10 years
- The middle school student is the deaf person’s granddaughter
