Teacher Lesson Plans - Create a New Country
Explanation (5 minutes)
Ask your students to put themselves into groups of 4 people and explain the following situation to the class
I want you to create a completely new country, and you must try to be as creative as possible. You will decide upon many different components of that country, and will finally present it to the class.
Task 1 (40 minutes)
In order to keep the English conversations flowing freely, a new discussion idea should be written on the board every 5 minutes. All teacher time should be spent circulating around the class talking to the groups about their country. Remind the groups that whenever possible, they should create new and interesting answers to the topics. These topics include;
- Where will your country be located, and what is its name?
- Which language will you speak?
- Which industries will your country concentrate on?
- Will the country have the death penalty?
- What type of political system will you use?
- Will you have a state religion?
- What is the national dish?
- Who will be allowed to marry (heterosexual / homosexual)?
Task 2 (5 minutes)
Ask the groups to design a flag for their country
Explain to the class the 5 points of making a good presentation (5 minutes)
- Be Clear in your pronunciation and don’t waffle
- Be loud enough to hear your own echo but don't shout
- Be slow enough so everyone can understand you but not boring
- Use body language whenever possible, or use multimedia aids
- Be interesting in your speech, and change tone and speed randomly
Preparation time (15 minutes)
Tell them class that they will present their country to the rest of the class, and that they should prepare an introduction about their country which should last about 5 minutes.
Present and give feedback (30 minutes)
Go through each group and listen with excitement to their crazy countries. If there is chance and time, allow questions from the class.
