English Slang
Slang refers to words or phrases which native English speakers use in everyday speech, and is essential to the student trying to learn English fluently and naturally. Many of the slang terms can’t be found in a standard dictionary, but speaking slang is still an invaluable skill to the English learner.
Ace
Meaning: Great, fantastic, wonderful
Example: 'That dinner was ace, thank you very much'
Bog Off
Meaning: Go away! (not polite)
Example: Why don't you just bog off? (to someone bothering you)
China
Meaning: Friend, mate
Example: 'Let's go to the cinema, my China'
Gobsmacked
Meaning: Amazed, astounded
Example: 'When I saw his face, I was gobsmacked. He was still a young man'
Loaded / Minted
Meaning: Wealthy, very rich
Example: Wow, that guy is loaded! Look at his clothes...
Let's go to a restaurant, I am minted tonight
Pig
Meaning: The police
Example: 'Quick, run, here comes the pigs.'
Rumble
Meaning: To discover something, to find out
Example: 'Oh no, our plans have been rumbled. Here comes the police'
Scive
Meaning: To evade doing one's duties
Example: 'I don't want to go to school today, I going to scive.'
Uni
Meaning: University
Example: 'Next year I want to go to uni'
