I managed to mail out two birthday cards a couple of days before the actual birthday of my Japanese friend and her daughter. They share the same birthday which is pretty unusual. She organized a birthday party for her baby.  As soon as the door was opened, I heard the screaming coming from the second floor of the house. Who wouldn't be frightened to see so many people sitting around the living room talking? I would be scared, too. Poor baby! I felt sorry for her parents as well as her. The banner was cute hanging around the house with a number one with teddy bear sticker on; the b-day cake looked too pretty to eat, and a big pile of presents was laying on the living room floor ready to be opened but the birthday girl herself was having an anxiety attack. Perhaps next year, she will be inured to people and will have fun opening her presents.

My friend told me that she would give the very first birthday card to her baby on her 20th birthday. Apparently, being 20 is the biggest thing in Japanese culture.
