Chinese Myths - Gender Prediction
Everyone knows that in China there exists a rule called the ‘one child policy,’ which as it suggests only allows one child per family. This is intended to slow down the fast population growth.
Chinese tradition however still favours the birth of a boy, and this causes problems when you only have one chance to have a child. As a result, girls were often aborted when still in pregnancy which led to an imbalance of the sexes. This was made possible with special hospital machinery which could see the gender of a child.
To fix the problem of abortions, China made such machinery illegal. As always, the people responded with their own ideas about how to predict the gender of a child before it is born. Listed below are some of those ideas, which although fairly ridiculous, are still believed by many older people and even the newly graduated intellectuals.
- If the baby is delivered after the expected due date, it
will be a girl - It depends on exactly when you conceived, as the usual 28
day menstrual cycle is split into half for boys and half for girls - If the mother dreams of a flower during pregnancy, it will
be a girl - If the pulse in the mother’s left wrist is stronger than the
right, it will be a boy - If the shape of the mothers belly is ‘round,’ it will be a boy.
If it is ‘long and thin’, it will be a girl - If the mother has strong morning sickness, it will be a boy
- If the unborn baby kicks mostly on the left of the tummy, it will be a boy
- If the mothers navel points to the left it will be a boy
- If the PH value of a vaginal swab taken during pregnancy is more acidic than normal, it will be a girl
If you have found these myths as interesting as I have, you might like to add a comment about how reasonable you think these ideas are. What about your country? Do you personally believe any myths about predicting the gender of a baby?
